Judging
Ron Smelt received his
ARBA Cavy Judges License #385 in February 1977 and his Rabbit Registrar License
in April 1996. He received his Rabbit Judges License in September 2011.
Ron is an active
judge, judging local, state (California) and national shows.
Ron has been
involved with Cavies since 1966 with his first pet shop Guinea pigs a Red
American with a white blaze on its nose and a Broken Color semi long haired
Rosetted Dark cream and white. Soon there after learned about show quality
Guinea Pigs and those referred to as Cavies. His first interest was
raising Peruvians, than Abyssinians, Teddies and White Crested. Joined the
American Cavy Breeders Association and American Rabbit Breeders Association in
the late 60’s and early 70’s. Over the years he has also raised American
Satins, Abyssinian Satins, Peruvian Satins, Silky Satins, Baldwins and Texels.
Presently he has
Americans in Red, Tans, Martens and Red Dutch. His Dutch was used in
the first Doctor Doolittle Movie staring Eddie Murphy and the Guinea Pig named
Rodney.
He holds the 3rd
Certificate of Development for the Marten Cavy and working with them in Beige,
Black, Blue (Slate), Chocolate and Lilac. First presentation will be at
the ARBA Convention in Del Mar California.
Ron makes an
extreme effort to attend all ARBA National Conventions and as many ACBA and AHRA
Nationals as he can. Prides himself in having attended 35 ARBA National
Conventions, starting with his first one in 1974. At the National
Conventions he has a been Cavy Judge, Examining Cavy Judge and organizing the
first Cavy Judges Conferences when none have been organized before.
For the past many
years, Ron has been appointed as examining judge for the Southern California
area.
Member of the
ARBA Youth Scholarship Committee, which he has served for many years
representing ARBA District #2.
He is also involved in
judging 4H competitions.
